Idea: I will be shooting images at my ballet studio. I want to focus on the color pink, which symbolizes innocence and femininity, by shooting pointe shoes and maybe some tutus and leotards worn by my friends. I want them to be in motion, but get shots of the poses they’re making. I want to keep the photos warm and soft, to really give a sense of comfort to the photos. I’m planning on experimenting different compositions and PoV’s based on each step they’re posing in.
Outcome: I ended up switching my symbolism for these photos, to one I thought was more prominent in these images and something I could really go off of. In these photos the mirror symbolizes the body issues dancers experience, and how they stand in front of mirrors all day, and how they often reflect back negative thoughts.
When I first looked at this photo my immediate thought was that it looked like she had a lion’s mane. I think they wanted to use that mane as symbolism for bravery and strength. They’re a black queer South-African fighting for their own rights and respect, and it takes a lot of courage to do that. They wants people to see themself as more than just those identifiers, by also being seen as a fighter and an activist, standing up for what’s right. Having the light illuminate their face also supports their entire face being the vocal point of this photo, along with the eye contact with the camera and framing with the mane.
